Winter can be a wonderful time to enjoy pregnancy, as you can remain at home under blankets drinking warm tea a lot of the time, but it can also be a challenge for some women. We’ve got some winter pregnancy tips to help you remain comfortable in these cooler months.
Maintaining Good Health with Nutrition
Fight off the winter colds and stay as healthy as possible this winter with a nutritional diet! Fuel your body with winter vegetables and homemade soups to get your immune system to support your body and your bump as best as possible. Stock up on leafy greens like cabbage, brussel sprouts and broccoli, and your seasonal root vegetables like parsnips, carrots, leeks and beetroot. Making sure you also remain hydrated with plenty of water and warm fruit teas is essential.
You might want to consider getting a flu vaccine to protect your immune system further and avoid complications that can come with getting ill while pregnant.
Winter Activities: Indoor & Out
If you're going for walks in the winter, ensure you wrap up warm enough and wear sturdy shoes that support your feet. Walking is a great form of exercise for pregnant women that also supports mental health. Swimming is a great option too. Staying active strengthens your immune system too and getting some fresh air is sometimes easy to forget on the days you want to stay bundled up at home in the warm! Just watch out for slippery pavements, and maybe take someone with you.
If you prefer to stay indoors for your exercise, then yoga is a brilliant exercise routine that is also great for Baby. Opening up the hips and practising breathing patterns and positions will support your body for the arrival of your baby and make a difference in your body and mental health.
Looking After Your Skin
Winter is notorious for drying out our skin and leaving our lips and hands chapped. Implementing a skincare routine for your overall skin health as well as your bump can hydrate your skin and reduce any itching you may be experiencing. Even though there’s less sunshine in the winter months, using an SPF on the face and neck is still recommended all year round. Avoid ingredients containing retinol and harsher exfoliating acids that can be found in skincare products or makeup. Choose a hydrating moisturiser, body butter or body oil that’s suitable for pregnant women and apply daily or every other day.
Rest. Sleep. Repeat
With shorter days and longer nights in the winter, sleeping and resting is a remedy not just for tiredness but for overall health. Don’t work your body too hard and remember to lie down when you need it. Pregnancy can be physically draining, so make sure to schedule ‘me time’ and rest regularly. Resting can be sleeping, or it can be shutting off with a new TV show or book. Don’t pressure yourself to be busy all the time in preparation for your little one. Mum needs all the rest she can get before bringing a newborn home.
Wrap up and Stay Warm
If you’re pregnant in the winter months, then finding a big jumper and your favourite scarf to wrap up warm is a must. Going outdoors means wearing something cosy but also comfortable. Maternity wear thermals might be something to look into. Layering clothes and wearing winter accessories like gloves and hats will ensure you stay warm. If your winter coat has got a little small and won't reach around your bump, then maybe investing in a maternity coat will come in handy. Layering up means you can always de-layer if you get warm while out.
Leaving blankets around the house as well as wearing warm socks and slippers will support your blood circulation and stop your toes from getting cold.
Anxiety Surrounding Pregnancy in the Winter
Many women experience anxiety during pregnancy. This is completely normal and relatable for many, as we all want to ensure our babies are healthy and that everything is prepared for their arrival.
With hormones bouncing around and anticipation about becoming first-time parents, amongst many other worries, anxiety is common. If you feel yourself getting worked up, or your heart rate increasing, try focusing on your breathing and closing your eyes in a quiet space. It’s important to create a stress-free environment while pregnant, for the baby as well as yourself. Reach out to friends and family for support when you need it and prioritise your health this winter.
