Dating Scan

Your due date is often calculated from the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP), however, you normally conceive around 14 days after your LMP or later if your cycle is longer than 28 days.

A dating scan works out more precisely how many weeks pregnant you are based on the size and development of your baby at the time of the scan. The NHS offer dating scans at around 12 weeks of pregnancy, however, you may feel that you want more information on your pregnancy earlier than that.

Sometimes it can feel like a very long wait from seeing a positive pregnancy test at around 2 weeks and then waiting another 10 weeks to have your pregnancy confirmed with a scan and to see the development of your baby.

Peek-a-baby offer dating scans from as early as 6 weeks of pregnancy, the 5-minute scan is 2D and will confirm the results of your pregnancy test, confirm babies heartbeat and gestational age and provide an accurate estimated due date.

At a six week scan, you can expect to see a gestation sac with a yolk sac developing in your uterus and the fetal pole (heartbeat), you will also be able to hear the heartbeat. From 8 week scans, you may also be able to see the baby making small movements.

You will receive three 2D black and white thermal prints as a keepsake. Please note that this scan requires a full bladder. You will need to start drinking fluid 30 to 45 minutes before your appointment time and refrain from using the bathroom within this period.
