Reproductive Fertility Scan
A reproductive scan is a crucial first test for women experiencing difficulties conceiving. This scan ensures the uterus and ovaries are present and functioning properly. The scan can detect signs of issues that may hinder natural conception, such as:
- Chronic pelvic pain
- Pain during sex
- Back pain
- Fatigue
- Nausea
- Irregular periods and spotting
- Bowel problems or pain with bowel movements
Pelvic Scan
A pelvic scan is an excellent starting point for examining the reproductive organs. This non-invasive scan helps detect potential gynaecological problems such as:
- Ovarian cysts
- Fibroids
- Endometriosis
- Other abnormalities in the uterus or ovaries
With the early detection of these issues, we can assist you in addressing them promptly, enhancing your chances of successful treatment and conception.

What A Fertility Scan Includes
For fertility testing, the diagnostic ultrasound scan can be performed in two ways:
- Abdominal Ultrasound:
- A gel is applied to your lower abdomen.
- A transducer is gently moved over the area to create images of your reproductive organs.
- Transvaginal Ultrasound:
- A slender, specialised wand-shaped transducer is gently inserted into the vagina.
- This method provides a closer view of the uterus and ovaries.
Both methods are generally not painful, though they may be slightly uncomfortable.
Information Gathered During A Fertility Scan
Ultrasound scans during fertility testing provide valuable information, including:
- Detailed images of the ovaries, endometrial lining, and uterus.
- Estimates of ovulation dates.
- Measurements of endometrial thickness.
- Follicle tracking to monitor ovulation and egg development.
Fertility Scan Questions Answered
Wear loose-fitting clothing.
Have a full bladder for the scan; you may be asked to drink 3-4 pints of water one hour before your appointment.
A full bladder helps push the intestines out of the way, making it easier to visualise the reproductive organs.
The scan typically takes no more than 30 minutes.
After a fertility scan our expert sonographers will compile a comprehensive report for your GP to follow up on, ensuring you receive the appropriate care and guidance based on the findings.
Ultrasound scans use high-frequency sound waves to create detailed images of your internal organs.
These are not typically painful but may be uncomfortable. Our team do as much as we can to ensure you remain as comfortable as possible throughout your scan appointment, but please let us know if you are uncomfortable at any point.
