6 Week Scan for Pregnancy
We understand that even if this is not your first pregnancy, getting reassurance is key for peace of mind in the very early days of pregnancy. This is why we offer our early pregnancy scan from 6 to 15 weeks, confirming your pregnancy and gestational age and giving an estimate due date.
Often referred to as a dating scan, or viability scan, a 6 week pregnancy scan is performed as a transabdominal ultrasound scan, confirming a successful pregnancy. In some case where a pregnancy is difficult to detect, we may ask for permission to perform a transvaginal ultrasound to aid detection.
The Significance of First Pregnancy Scans
An early pregnancy scan confirms successful pregnancy from just 6 weeks; this is the primary focus at this point in pregnancy. From 6 to 9 weeks, an ultrasound scan can detect the presence of a gestational sac, yolk sac and a fetal pole. At roughly 7 weeks, the fetal heartbeat can also be measured which is a vital indication that the pregnancy is viable.
With NHS scans from 12 weeks, Peek A Baby’s first pregnancy scan offer parents an opportunity to meet their baby before going for you hospital scan.

The Benefits of a First Pregnancy Scan
Having a private first pregnancy scan can bring a number of benefits and reassurance for first time mums, and those who are expanding their families. These can include:
- Pregnancy Confirmation: Confirmation of your pregnancy if vital to rule out any pregnancy concerns such as blighted ovum or ectopic pregnancies.
- Accurate Dating: Early scans can provide precise fetal measurements, helping to accurately date your pregnancy and give an estimated due date.
- Parental Reassurance: For many parents, whether first time or not, an early pregnancy scan can provide reassurance in the pregnancy and an opportunity to develop a connection with their baby.
- Identification of Multiple Pregnancies: First pregnancy scans are able to detect multiple pregnancies (twins, triplets etc.). These pregnancies require special monitoring and care, so establishing this early can ensure the right care is given to both mum and babies.
- Early Detection of Abnormalities: First pregnancy scan can sometimes detect significant abnormalities that can lead to early pregnancy management or decision for parents. Peek A Baby’s anomaly scan later in pregnancy can provide more insight into any abnormalities from 18 to 21 weeks.
There are numerous benefits to first pregnancy scans from 6 weeks. Peek A Baby provide early pregnancy scans in Birmingham, Bromsgrove and London to get parents opportunity to meet their baby for the first time and seek the reassurance they need in early pregnancy.
6 Week Scans with Gender Reveal
At Peek A Baby, we also offer an exciting opportunity for expecting parents to meet their baby from just 6 weeks, but also to reveal their baby’s gender too!
Our early gender blood test can be taken from 6 weeks of pregnancy, alongside our early pregnancy scan. It requires a blood sample from the mother in order to obtain fetal DNA. Once this has been separated from the mothers DNA, chromosome analysis takes place to determine the gender of your baby. Where Y chromosomes are detected, this identified the gender as a boy; if no Y chromosomes are detected, the baby is a girl.
This non-invasive prenatal test (NIPT test) provides 99.9% accuracy and highly reliable results, giving parents an opportunity to celebrate with their loved ones and plan for their baby’s arrival sooner.

First Pregnancy Scan FAQs
The short answer to this is yes. Peek A Baby details three options in this situation. For more information, click here.
Pregnancy scans are increasingly accurate from 6 weeks onwards. Before 6 weeks, the pregnancy may not provide a clear enough image due to being too small.
When you come for a first pregnancy scan, a full bladder is required. All scans below 19 weeks will require a full bladder in our clinics.
Sadly, baby will often have a mind of its own. We recommend that you drink or eat something sugary roughly 10-20 minutes before your scan and bring a cold drink with you. We also recommend drinking plenty of water in the days before your scan for enhanced clarity on the ultrasound.
Ultrasound scans are completely safe for mothers and abys during pregnancy due to there being no radiation or surgical procedures involved. All scans should adhere to the ALARA principle (as low as reasonable possible) to ensure minimal exposure during scans.
Calculating your due date can be tricky. We have got our Eligibility Calculator on our early gender blood tests page that can help you check if you are roughly 6 weeks pregnant.
At Peek A Baby, we give you an estimate due date on your first scan with us. Alternatively, you can contact our team and seek advice on how to do this before your scan.
